If you’re older than 20, the term “ET” almost certainly conjures up a picture of a wiry little creature from another world who won the hearts of a family with his quirky powers and nasally voice. Tom Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum, in their recent book That Used To Be Us: How America Fell Behind In The World It Invented And How We Can Come Back, identify another “ET” that will have far-reaching consequences for our nation and our world:
“…the technologies that can supply abundant, cheap, clean and reliable energy will be the next new global industry. Energy technology – ET – will be the new IT. A country with a thriving ET industry will enjoy energy security, will enhance its own national security, and will contribute to global environmental security. It will also be home to innovative companies, because companies cannot make products greener without inventing smarter materials, smarter software, and smarter designs …”
The EWI Energy Center operates with this very vision. From development of innovative ultrasonic and laser welding techniques for advanced storage batteries to support of the burgeoning shale gas industry, EWI is working to make “a thriving ET industry” a reality.
