The big storms that ripped through Traverse City on Sunday night and Monday didn’t dampen the excitement at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars when the meeting opened yesterday afternoon. According to EWI Associates attending the event, there is great buzz about progress being made in the areas of lightweighting, advanced powertrain, and new materials. Here’s what we’re hearing after a day at the MBS…
From Jerry Gould, EWI Technology Leader — “Good discussions from the materials companies on advances (steel, aluminum, composites) in their product mixes and how that will affect the industry. Joining technologies include welding, mechanical fastening, and adhesive bonding. Of note was the use of carbon fiber reinforcements onto steel elements to enhance structural integrity while reducing weight.”
From Mark Yadach, EWI Business Development Manager for Automotive — “Undoubtedly, Gen 3 steels, aluminium, and carbon composites will play significant roles in the emerging, multi-material strategies that are begin adopted by OEMs. The common denominator of these strategies are the joining challenges that are created. Exciting times ahead…”
