On Tuesday, September, ten EWI Associates spent their day working at Spruce Run Nature Preserve in Delaware County. It was part of the Central Ohio United Way Volunteer Challenge – where employers send people out all over the city to help various non-profits. Our intrepid team, lead by Principal Engineer for Arc Welding Randy Dull, threw their efforts into enhancing a camp in the preserve that provides children from inner-city Columbus schools with learning experiences in the great outdoors.
EWI associates built wooden picnic tables (put to use that very day by visiting students), cleared hiking paths in the forest of obstacles and safety hazards (like the rusty remnants of an old barbed wire fence) cleared the woods for fallen limbs, then cut and stacked them to provide a plentiful supply of wood for camp fires. We received thanks from a class of first graders visiting that day – with a little prompting from their teacher. Applications engineer Paul Zelenak even found a garter snake which provided the kids with quite a bit to talk and learn about!
EWI’s involvement with the United Way’s day of service highlights one of our organization’s core values — service. We were pleased to be able to help enhance the facilities at Spruce Run and contribute to the educational experiences of children in the greater Columbus community.
