Combining aluminum and steel construction in vehicle manufacturing can offer great lightweighting and strength advantages. The formation of brittle intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in the joints between the materials, however, are known to impair performance. Prediction of such intermetallic formation is often difficult to assess due to the rapid thermal cycles involved.
