EWI Selected to Support MxD-led $67 Million Defense Manufacturing Modernization Initiative

EWI brings advanced robotics, digital manufacturing, and repair process expertise to nationwide effort strengthening the U.S. Organic Industrial Base

COLUMBUS, OH – EWI, a leading advanced manufacturing and engineering solutions company, has been selected as a sub-awardee on a defense manufacturing modernization project funded through MxD’s recently announced $67 million award from the U.S. Department of War. The funding supports nine projects aimed at strengthening the nation’s Organic Industrial Base (OIB) and increasing manufacturing capacity and resilience across the defense industrial enterprise.

Building on its ongoing support for U.S. Air Force depot modernization, EWI will apply its manufacturing expertise in advanced robotics, digital manufacturing, process monitoring, and thermal and cold spray. These efforts will focus on making repair processes more agile, helping components move more efficiently through depot systems as they undergo maintenance and repair.

The project will utilize kinematic digital twins, process digital twins, digital thread, industrial internet of things, and real-time process feedback. Activities will take place across three Air Force Air Logistics Complexes to help bridge repair gaps and improve agility across the depot network.

“Strengthening the Organic Industrial Base means giving depots the tools to work faster and more flexibly,” said EWI’s Chief Executive Officer Steve Kelly. “We’re proud to continue our work with the Air Force to apply advanced manufacturing and repair technologies that help depots keep pace with demand.”

EWI’s work will support one of the nine projects funded through the MxD award announced on August 5, 2026. With decades of manufacturing engineering expertise, the company will apply proven technologies and processes to help the Air Force improve the speed, flexibility, and reliability of depot repair operations. EWI’s role in the initiative is expected to continue for approximately two years.
