Ultrasonic metal welding is one of the most effective ways to join lithium-ion batteries. However, the need to completely replace the sonotrode due to tool wear is a limiting factor for manufacturers who are performing tens of thousands of welds per day.
EWI has designed and validated a sonotrode with a replaceable tip made of wear-resistant tungsten carbide that can save money, material, and reduce welder downtime. Applications Engineer Amin Moghaddas has written Ultrasonic Metal Welding: Reducing Tooling Costs with a Multiple-pad, Replaceable-tip Sonotrode to describe the details.
