Introducing LeakSight™: The Future of Battery Box Leak Detection

February 28, 2025

As the electric vehicle industry continues to grow, the pressure on automotive suppliers and OEMs to deliver leak-free battery enclosures — an expensive and critical component — grows as well. Not reflected in the importance of these enclosures is the effectiveness of traditional leak detections methods. Current techniques may be expensive, difficult to implement, or leave manufacturers with a guessing game, struggling to pinpoint the exact location of a leak. This is where LeakSight™ from EWI steps in.

LeakSight’s unique approach to leak detection uses a color-changing reagent that reacts with ozone, providing fast, precise results. By applying the reagent to the exterior of the battery enclosure, it marks any leaks with a visible color change in just seconds. This allows manufacturers to identify and repair leaks quickly, catching defective units before they move on in the manufacturing process.

Developing a low-cost, safe, and reliable leak detection system for battery enclosures was no easy feat. EWI carefully selected ozone for its safety and efficacy — meeting critical criteria like low toxicity, non-flammability, availability, and affordability. EWI also created a custom reagent that undergoes a permanent color change from white to purple when exposed to low concentrations of ozone, making it easy for manufacturers to visually detect leaks and take action.

LeakSight is easy to integrate into existing production lines. The system only requires an ozone generator, a vacuum pump, and two simple ports on the battery enclosure. The process is also quick, making it a cost-effective and efficient solution for manufacturers.
