In metal additive manufacturing (AM), grain size variations within the material microstructure can have a significant impact on its mechanical properties, thus affecting the integrity of the part. Being able to accurately measure grain size distribution throughout the build can be used to improve part strength and fatigue life.
EWI has developed a grain size measurement technique for additively manufactured metallic materials that is currently under review by the ASTM standards committee F42. Principal Engineer Alber Sadek has written Measurement and Characterization of Grain Size in Additively Manufactured Metals to describe the work involved in creating this new measurement method.
