Surface engineering – the range of enabling technologies designed to modify the surface properties of metallic and non-metallic components to improve function or decoration – is becoming a more widely used technology in parts manufacturing throughout all industrial sectors.
As new metals and composites become available for use in manufacturing, companies are challenged with finding the best ways to apply them effectively. Surface engineering technologies are helping to optimize the joining of new and dissimilar materials, as well as support additive manufacturing applications. Most recently, cold spray has gained the attention of both commercial and defense manufacturers.
Senior Technical Advisor, Larry Brown has written a new paper, Manufacturing Processes: Surface Engineering and Cold Spray Technology, which discusses the potential for these processes in production.
