Elevated greenhouse gas emissions have led to significant ecological changes including a global rise in temperature. Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration is a primary concern. Efforts have been made to improve automobile drivetrain efficiency, but additional improvements in overall automobile design are necessary. The most recent approach is to reduce vehicle weight with lighter materials to reduce fuel consumption. The unique welding challenges associated with the use of advanced lightweight materials are addressed in this article.
