EWI Celebrates 40 Years of Technical Excellence, Innovation, and Service

October 24, 2024

The 1980s were difficult years for manufacturing in the United States, particularly in the Midwest “Rust Belt.” Plants were closing or relocating, unemployment was in the double digits, manufacturing facilities were aging, and producers were facing significant trade barriers for exported goods.

Great ideas, however, often emerge in response to the challenges of the times.

When the State of Ohio launched a research and knowledge network to support and expand manufacturing in the region, a group of visionaries in Columbus proposed a unique center dedicated to delivering advanced welding and joining technology directly to the industry. Edison Welding Institute – now known as EWI – was officially incorporated on October 25, 1984, with the stated purpose to aid in the creation of new businesses, revitalize existing ones, enhance productivity, and stimulate economic growth.

A lot has happened in the four decades since then. To date, EWI has completed nearly 17,000 projects to help commercial and government customers test materials and processes, solve problems, and innovate for success. More than 1000 internal R&D studies have been conducted to explore new materials, probe emerging technologies, and directly address industry challenges. We’ve patented more than 50 processes or products and have another dozen currently in application. All of these efforts continue to support our mission to provide you with specialized technical solutions that improve your company’s operations and elevate your competitiveness.

As we celebrate EWI’s 40th anniversary of innovating for the manufacturing industry, we highlight current associates who were here in the early days:

Lynne Stephens, Accounts Receivable Manager, was one of the first permanent employees hired by EWI in January 1985. “Five of us started out working in a single room before the rest of the building was ready. I was tasked with setting up the original database of EWI members,” she says. “Through the years, the way EWI cares so much for its employees has stayed consistent. The company has been recognized for this, and it is very much appreciated by all associates.”

Jerry Gould

Jerry Gould, Senior Technology Leader, likes to say that he has done the same job for 40 years, though he has actually held many positions at EWI. When pressed, he admits that evolving technology and manufacturing challenges keep it all fresh. “There’s always a call for creativity and the need to explore different solutions,” he says. “The adrenaline rush that you get from trying something new in order to solve a problem will always be there.”

Tim Stotler -- then

Tim Stotler, Senior Engineer, was an undergraduate student at Ohio State when he showed up to help move some furniture into EWI’s first building. His appearance eventually led to a job as a technician working with Jerry. “So much has changed,” he says. “Back then, three of four people had to share a computer on a cart. But one thing that has stayed the same is the intense curiosity of the staff. I have learned so much from so many people. I am honored and grateful to have been a small part of the growth of EWI.”

As EWI marks its 40th year, we salute our entire family – our original supporters, our dedicated staff, and of course, all of our members and customers who enable us to continue this worthwhile and exciting endeavor.
