EWI’s Manager of Library & Information Services Honored by Alma Mater

November 9, 2011

Congratulations to Darlene Kerr, EWI’s Manager of Library & Information Services, who was honored recently by The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University as a 2011 Rose L. Vormelker Alumni Award winner. The award is given to students who rank high academically and show the most promise for special library work. Darlene earned her Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science from Kent State last year.

As the head of Library Services for EWI Darlene oversees more than 5,000 article retrievals and 500 literature searches each year for EWI’s member companies (a wide variety of manufacturers from around the country who receive unlimited support from the library as part of their EWI membership). Engineers from the member companies contact the library when they need information on technical topics related to materials joining, welding, and manufacturing technologies. Because Darlene and her team have access to some of the largest technical databases in the world, they can locate information quickly and send it on to members. EWI even pays the royalties on articles they retrieve for members.

Darlene is also in charge of knowledge management at EWI and is currently finishing up a company-wide records audit. She recently reminded us that, on average, 85% of the records a company keeps are never referred to again. Thanks for the reality check, Darlene, and for all you do for EWI and our members!
