Last month at EWI, nine professionals from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission attended a two-week Welding Technology and Codes Training class. This course, specially created for the NRC, was first offered in 2009 by EWI in conjunction with OSU Welding Engineering faculty. EWI and OSU are in a unique position to offer this course with the collective knowledge and teaching experience of both institutions, as well as having the equipment available to demonstrate all of the welding and testing processes of interest.
This custom-designed course is structured around qualifying a welding procedure to meet the requirements of both ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section IX, and AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code—Steel. Teaching modules include an introduction to codes and standards, welding processes, welding metallurgy, weldability, design, nondestructive testing, and qualification of procedures and welders. Each module is framed from code perspective—what the essential variables are and why they are essential.
Feedback ratings for the course were excellent with an average of 4.7 out of 5. If you are interested in EWI developing a training course to meet the needs of your organization, please contact [email protected] or call 614.688.55049.
