The EWI Sales & Marketing team spent this morning at the Central Ohio Ronald McDonald House volunteering. The Columbus Ronald McDonald House is the second largest of its kind in the US and is the third largest in the world. It serves as a “home away from home” for parents, grandparents, and siblings of children being cared for at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and other hospitals in the Central Ohio area. Our day began with a tour of the impressive facility, which is operated almost entirely by volunteers.
When we registered to volunteer our time we were told by the volunteer coordinator that they didn’t know exactly what we would be doing and that we would find out when we arrived. To our delight, we discovered that our primary activity would be pulling up old carpet, tack strips, and glue, to prepare for some new flooring that has been donated to the house. We were told by our volunteer host that this was in fact quite a unique task and that tasks such as this don’t come along often for volunteers. Although we began the day doubting that we would be able to accomplish our task within the few short hours that we had available, we were very pleased to not only complete the job, but also have time to volunteer in the kitchen with an organizational task.
We walked away from the experience with a new appreciation for the Ronald McDonald House charities and also with great pride in knowing that we were able to help make a small difference. Tomorrow our aching backs and the blisters on our hands will remind us that we should never doubt our abilities and we should be thankful for the health and happiness of our loved ones.
