Ghost Microstructures of Fiber Laser Welds

February 1, 2011

A 600-watt, single-mode, IPG fiber laser was used to make these three parallel laser welds between stainless steel components. The rapid solidification rate may have helped create weld metal microstructures that are similar to base metal. Proper metallographic preparation and etching are needed to reveal what seem to be invisible welds.
