Manufacturing engineers need tools that can help them understand microstructural changes during processes like welding, additive manufacturing, and heat treatment. Some available techniques (analytical, empirical, FEA) have been discussed in EWI’s recent ICME series* of papers. An additional approach uses phenomenological modeling to provide information important to predicting metallurgical behavior.
EWI associates Rafael Giorjão and Jerry Gould have written Phenomenological Metallurgical Constructs for ICME Assessments of Welding Challenges, to highlight several constructs that are valuable for using ICME to predict material performance.
