We are proud to announce the 2024 winners of the EWI Technical Excellence Awards!
The recipients have demonstrated exceptional expertise and leadership in their skill areas and project work.
Joshua James, Engineer of the Year
Senior Technology Leader Joshua James directs the corrosion and environmental testing group at EWI. Over the past few years, he has led our efforts in establishing the new hydrogen and CO2 test labs in our Columbus facility, both of which are now fully operational and accepting projects. Prior to joining EWI 2020, Josh served as a Principal Research Scientist at Battelle in the advanced materials group. He also spent two years leading internal research and development at Resonetics, focusing on materials issues surrounding a burgeoning additive manufacturing program, and seven years as a Project Engineer at DNV investigating materials integrity threats in the energy industry. Josh holds two patents, including one for a corrosion inhibiting coating additive.
Matthew Hay, Technician of the Year
Principal Technician Matthew Hay works with thick-section laser/arc hybrid welding, powder-directed energy deposition, and strip and wire-feedstock cladding. He regularly performs workstation setup and robot and CNC programming. Matt was selected for the 2024 award based on his creative solutions to recent challenges on laser strip cladding and belt tag trimming projects. Before he joined EWI in 2022, Matt gained experience as a machine operator, engineering coordinator, and team supervisor. His multifaceted experience contributes to his versatility, and his personal initiative makes him a highly sought-after technical resource at EWI.
J. Logan McNeil, Outstanding Project Impact Award – Convergent Manufacturing
Applications Engineer Logan McNeil receives technical excellence recognition this year for his leadership in EWI’s convergent manufacturing initiative. The idea behind convergent manufacturing is to create a synergistic system in which multiple processes – additive, subtractive, inspection, and selection – can all be conducted within one work cell or station. Such a system also pairs physical components with digital models and can integrate sensor networks for process monitoring and in-situ inspection. Over the past 18 months, Logan’s work in internal R&D, government-funded development programs, and subsequent client projects has led to EWI’s recognition as a world leader in large-scale convergent manufacturing expertise. Logan is a member of our arc welding and DED technology team. He has authored multiple publications in additive manufacturing and automation.
Congratulations to these outstanding associates!
