Like many welding engineers, I’ve often found it difficult to explain just what it is that a welding engineer does. A recent video produced by WOSU does an excellent job of answering that question. Personally, my favorite quote from the video is: “A welding engineer is no more a welder than a mechanical engineer is a mechanic or an electrical engineer is an electrician“. The science behind welding and joining (especially the materials aspects) can be very complex and often requires engineering judgment.
