Nuclear energy is often a devisive topic that evokes strong emotions in many circles. At the EWI Energy Center, we believe nuclear power is an important part of an integrated long term energy solution. We work closely with our colleagues at the EWI run Nuclear Fabrication Consortium to address issues in nuclear energy. The United States once led the world in technical expertise and manufacturing capability for nuclear energy. However, public concern led to a halt in new construction. While the US supply base has stagnated, the rest of the global market has continued to develop technology and expertise. For instance, China currently has plans for 28 new reactors by 2020. This large scale of new investment internationally is putting the US behind the rest of the class.
EWI and the Greater Cleveland Partnership are hosting “The Future of Nuclear Technology in the US” on September 21, 2010 in Cleveland Ohio. We hope that by sharing fact-based information about nuclear energy, the forum will begin the process of breaking down misperceptions about the energy source and enable the industry, decision makers, and the general public to make informed decisions about the future of nuclear power in the U.S. The day will include discussion on:
- Technology – What is the history of nuclear power? What is Gen III and how is it different then Gen IV? What new technology is in store for the future?
- Economic Impact – What does a vibrant US nuclear industry mean for jobs? What is the advantage to upgrading versus building new?
- Enviroment – How does nuclear interact with the myriad of other advanced energy sources? What can be done with the waste that this power source creates?
- Public Policy – What are other countries doing? What does the US need to do to keep up with the rest of the world?
