EWI Opening New Applied Research Center in Colorado

April 22, 2016

Westward expansion marks EWI’s commitment to establishing centers of manufacturing excellence across the nation

Loveland, CONon-profit engineering and applied R&D company EWI is opening a new innovation center dedicated to establishing best-in-class technical capabilities in advanced quality measurement technologies. Located at the Rocky Mountain Center for Innovation & Technology in Loveland, EWI Colorado will help manufacturers gain a competitive advantage through the application of advanced process monitoring and inspection control technologies. The center is expected to open in late summer.

With its focus on advanced quality measurement, EWI Colorado will concentrate on technologies to improve first time quality.  Focus areas for applied R&D will include real-time manufacturing process monitoring and analysis, advanced nondestructive (NDE) evaluation, computer vision inspection, non-contact metrology, and structural health monitoring. The center will also work to enable manufacturers to transition proven, high-value, technologies to the factory floor. This technology focus was chosen for its broad industrial relevance to Colorado industries following extensive regional and national focus groups, advisory group meetings, and customer input.

“Manufacturers in Colorado and throughout the country agree that there is a need for more reliable NDE, as well as accurate real-time monitoring,” says Tom McGaughy, EWI’s Director of Technology. “The activities at EWI Colorado will support development and implementation of those technologies across all manufacturing sectors.”

EWI Colorado will leverage and build upon existing EWI capabilities in Columbus (OH) and Buffalo (NY). Though it will focus primarily on advanced process monitoring and controls, client manufacturers will benefit from all of EWI’s existing technology resources and capabilities. These areas include materials joining and forming, advanced automation, and additive manufacturing.

“We are tremendously excited about opening EWI’s third lab facility in Colorado,” said Chris Conrardy, EWI Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. “With high tech manufacturing growing rapidly in the state and outstanding regional partners, we have already established a strong foundation for the new center of excellence.

The new facility, which is made possible through a culmination of strategic regional partnerships with the Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Alliance (CAMA), the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), and the City of Loveland, CO, will serve as one of FourFront Colorado’s four FUSE Centers located throughout the state. Extensive collaboration will ensure the strong and unified growth of Colorado manufacturing.

Tim Heaton, President of CAMA stated “EWI is the cornerstone of FourFront and it is what will put Colorado and FourFront on the map. With EWI’s skills, abilities and manufacturing expertise, they will truly be able to help grow and innovate our manufacturing industry.”

EWI plans for the Colorado facility to grow into additional technology areas as further regional partnerships are formed and the member base is expanded.
